First: which type of dryer do you have?
- Vented – has a hose that blows hot, damp air out. Cheapest and most common in older HDB flats.
- Condenser – collects water in a tank or drains it away; no hose. Uses a heating element.
- Heat pump – energy-saving, runs cooler and longer. Uses a compressor instead of an element, so "not heating" often means a blocked evaporator or refrigerant issue rather than a burnt element.

Safety first
Lint is flammable. If your dryer is very hot to touch, smells of burning or trips the circuit breaker, stop using it and book a check. Never bypass a thermal fuse.
When to service instead of repair
If the dryer still heats a little but takes far too long, a full lint and airflow clean often restores it without any parts. For heat-pump dryers, cleaning the evaporator fins every 6–12 months makes a noticeable difference in Singapore's humidity.

Can I repair a dryer myself?
Cleaning the lint filter and condenser is safe DIY. Replacing elements, fuses or belts means opening the cabinet and working around mains voltage – we recommend leaving that to a technician, and DIY may void any remaining warranty.
